Ohio Valley Birding Festival Family Day
Date: Saturday, May 2, 2009
Time: 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
Location: Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve
Cost: FREE

Evansville, Indiana – From twitters to tweet tweet tweets, from whistles to weezy weezy weets, the sounds of spring are here again! But did you know many of those warm weather songs are the sounds of migratory birds that have come from as far away as South America and that may be heading as far north as Canada’s northern territories? While some of these species might visit your backyard birdfeeder, many can be more easily spotted in our larger green spaces. In fact, Wesselman Nature Society is hosting a free Ohio Valley Birding Festival Family Day at Wesselman Woods this Saturday with a number of hikes, workshops, and programs for birders of all levels and interest.

The morning’s activities will begin with a guided family birding hike at 8 a.m. A packed schedule of activities follows and will continue through 3 p.m. Join in on a spring bird banding workshop as a naturalist catches, identifies, bands, and releases birds as part of an ongoing research and conservation project. Or for those less queasy visitors, another program begins at this time that will offer a hands-on look at the exciting world of owl puke via the dissection of sterilized owl pellets! Other Family Day activities include a live raptor show, a workshop on creating a backyard wildlife habitat, a program on the basics of birding, a “Jeop-Birdy bird IQ” session, and a birdhouse building workshop. All of the day’s activities have been designed to suit an age range from the very young to the very young at heart.

This Family Day is a focused portion of the Ohio Valley Birding Festival that utilizes Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve trails, the Nature Center, and other amenities of the Preserve. The overall festival consists of a whole host of activities for birders (or potential birders) of all ages and skill levels. Guided hikes to area birding hotspots such as Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, Howell Wetlands, John James Audubon State Park, Blue Grass Fish and Wildlife Area, and the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge will showcase a variety of native and migratory bird species. Various lectures and workshops are offered throughout the festival as well.

This event is made possible through the participation and sponsorship of Wesselman Nature Society, Evansville Audubon Society, Wild Birds Unlimited, John James Audubon State Park, and the Southwest Indiana Master Naturalist Association, as well as the generous support of the Thomas and Sharon Ruder Foundation.

The Ohio Valley Birding Festival is held from Thursday, April 30 to Sunday, May 3 with over 30 hikes, lectures, and other scheduled birding activities including a keynote address from Alan Gehret on the history and impact of John James Audubon on the ornithology and bird conservation in the Ohio Valley. Gehret is the Curator of the John James Audubon Museum in Henderson, Kentucky. For a complete schedule, please visit the Ohio Valley Birding Festival event page (www.wesselmannaturesociety.org/events/birding.php).

Wesselman Nature Society utilizes area woodlands, wetlands, and waterways as educational resources, outdoor classrooms, and learning laboratories for educators and students of Southwest Indiana and beyond. Through these opportunities, visitors and program participants may find a greater understanding and enjoyment of natural and cultural resources both inside and outside the boundaries of protected sites. The Wesselman Nature Society was founded in 1973 for the purpose of protecting the nearly 200 acre tract in Evansville, Indiana now known as Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Today this 501c (3) not-for-profit organization is responsible for the preservation, management, and daily operations of Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, Howell Wetlands, and Canoe Evansville. www.WesselmanNatureSociety.org
