Amazonia Numbers Are In!
(EVANSVILLE, IN)- AMAZONIA has helped Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden shatter attendance records - 38,206 visitors visited the zoo between August 4th when AMAZONIA opened and September 4th. To put that number in perspective, 7,961 visitors passed through the zoo’s gates during the same time period in 2007 and 14,166 in 2006. The previous monthly attendance record was set in May 2005 with 27,841 visitors. That number was attributed to zoo improvements and an increase in membership sales.
AMAZONIA also broke records during the first week it was open. 15,372 visitors came to the zoo between August 4th and August 10th. In comparison, attendance for the entire month of August 2007 was 8,113. On the first Saturday AMAZONIA was open, 3,914 visitors passed through the gates. That is the largest paid attendance day in Zoo history.
“When AMAZONIA opened, we knew it would be a great draw because it is a fantastic exhibit, but the response has been truly overwhelming,” said Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel. “We hope to see increased attendance numbers through the fall and winter as well because visitors will be able to continue enjoying this indoor exhibit.”
With increased attendance, it stands to reason that revenue at the zoo has increased as well. In AMAZONIA’s first month, zoo revenue was $281,563. That total does not include concessions or vending. Revenue for the same timeframe in 2007 was $65,890 and $89,622 in 2006. The previous monthly revenue record was in May 2008 with $160,299.
Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden is open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the entry gate closes at 4:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $8.50 and $7.50 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free. In recognition of their support, Vanderburgh County residents receive a $1 discount.
