EVANSVILLE, IN. - Now that the much awaited Amazonia, Forest of Riches exhibit has opened at Mesker Park Zoo, the buzz is all about what you will see in this lush jungle setting. Zoo personnel have worked on growing the plantlife, creating the work stations and preparing the animals that are natural to this habitat for two years. Below are the results -
Monkeys, reptiles and more, oh my! The Amazonia exhibit includes roughly 150 animals from about 26 species, including mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Some featured animals are: *Beliza, the jaguar and queen of the Amazon *Emerald tree boas *Capybaras, world's largest rodent (up to 140 pounds) *Keel-billed toucans *Caimans, reptile similar to an alligator *Tegu, a large lizard *Tapir, a horse relative with hippo feet, elephant-like trunk and large pig body *Tamarins, squirrel-sized monkeys *Howler monkeys *Prehensile-tailed porcupines *Giant waxy monkey frogs, largest species of tree frogs *Yellow-bellied slider turtle *Piranha *River Rays
