Firefly's Recognized for Excellence

ScottW.jpg Evansville, Indiana (July 25, 2008) – Firefly Southern Grill has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2008, recognized by the magazine’s editors as having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world. The locally-owned restaurant was the only Evansville establishment to make the list, joining just 26 restaurants in all of Indiana, mostly located in Indianapolis. Just over 4,000 restaurants across the globe were honored this year and all are listed in the August issue of Wine Spectator, the nation’s most read wine magazine. The award follows recognition as the Tri-States Best Food Event venue by the upscale Evansville Living magazine in its 2008 Best of Evansville Awards issue. A searchable list of all award winners can be reviewed at www.winespectator.com/restaurants.

The restaurant’s wine list was also cited for its affordability. According to the magazine’s editors, the wine list at Firefly Southern Grill “offers many bottles for less than $50, while also employing a below-normal markup (generally considered to be two to two-and-a-half times the wholesale bottle price).” The editors also note that such lists offer uncommon value.

“We are especially grateful that our list was recognized for its affordability,” said co-owner Scott Wylie. “It has been very important to us since we opened to offer a broadly accessible menu. If a diner wants a steak with all the sides or just a burger with fries, we want them to be happy, lunch or dinner. Our wine list was designed in the same way.” Firefly’s all-American wine list currently features approximately 140 bottles from throughout the nation all chosen to complement the restaurant’s distinctive, home-made Southern cuisine. The list is supplemented by the areas largest selection of Kentucky bourbons, 46 of which are available by the glass.

To celebrate the award, the restaurant will offer its entire by-the-bottle list at a 20% discount for the month of August. On September 13th, noted wine authority Bill Wortz of National Wine and Spirits will offer a Wine 101 class to introduce novice wine drinkers and collectors to the joy of wine. Later in the fall, the restaurant will pair with WineStyles to offer a pre-holiday wine tasting and sale. Information on these events and others, including Firefly’s Wednesday jazz nights, can be found on the restaurant’s website at www.fireflysoutherngrill.com.

Wylie noted, “Evansville is a wonderful place and deserves to have a wide variety of distinctive and unique restaurants. We hope to continue to help distinguish Evansville in the market place.”
