DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT
Work on the site for the new downtown arena and hotel has begun. Demolition began in November and new construction should begin in late spring. The arena, hotel and existing convention center will be connected by overhead crosswalks making Evansville a full service destination for conventions, meetings and sporting or special events. The picture shown is a rendering of the proposed design for the hospitality suites in the arena.
The buzz is contagious! A new sports restaurant - The Main Gate - recently opened a block away from the proposed entrance for the new arena on Main Street. Condo and loft apartment development along Main grew steadily in the last decade. This attracted numerous restaurants, entertainment and service businesses along this corridor which promises to become the new "hot" spot in Evansville when the arena is open in early 2012.
Stay tuned! We will keep you informed with pics and video(on our new website coming in the next few months) as construction continues.
CUTE CUBS!
Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden's Amazonia exhibit opened 18 months ago and been a raving success since day one. Zoo officials report 2009 shattered attendance and revenue records set in 2008. Attendance in 2009 was 202,224, a 12% increase over 2008 (180,857). Revenue in 2009 was $1,456,627 which was 20.7% higher than in 2008 ($1,206,645).
The most popular reason is our jaguar babies, Maya and Zimba, born in September of 2009. The birth of the cubs highlights the success of the Zoo's breeding program. As of 2007, there were only about 44 jaguars in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Jaguar Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program. Mesker is one of only 19 zoos in the country participating in the AZA SSP Program.
Hopes were guarded on the success of Mom Beliza and Pop Cuxtal - our resident jaguars - on their first mating attempt. But all went well, the cubs were born healthy and Beliza is a wonderful mother. As the cubs are part of the SSP program, they will be moved when they are weaned which will be between one to two years old. Until then, they are on display at Amazonia 365 days a year!
